A boat met our ship today to take the injured passenger to shore and we resumed our voyage to the Great White Continent. Our captain tells us that we will make up for lost time during the voyage because the weather is showing signs of clearing up. We spend tomorrow and a bit of the day after in the Drake Passage before we reach Antarctica.
Today, our expedition teams game us lectures on the birds of the Drake Passage and the Antarctic food chain. Did you know that some birds live almost completely on the ocean and only return to land to breed? They nap on the water and some biologists think that birds can sleep while flying too! We were the only ones in the audience who brought textbooks with us – a field guide on Antarctic Birds and an encyclopedia on Antarctic wildlife. Now that we know which species we expect to see, we´ll be able to read up in advance. Score!
We´ve also been told to give penguins the right of way when we see them.
